Fighting for the Vote

The first women's rights convention took place in Seneca Falls, N.Y., in July 1848.
Written by Elizabeth Cady Stanton, it claimed that "all men and women are created equal" and that "the history of mankind is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations on the part of man toward woman." Thanks to this, women were allowed to have rights, vote and other legar process rights.

Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony, a temperance and antislavery advocate, formed the National Woman Suffrage Association (NWSA) in New York.
Lucy Stone organized the American Woman Suffrage Association (AWSA) in Boston.
Eventually, in 1890, the two groups united as the National American Woman Suffrage Association (NAWSA).

The struggle to win the vote was slow and frustrating. but we're thankful because it was succesful!

Women in Reform Movements

American women always tried to change discrimination and work in better-life proyects to help society.

For example:
Sarah and Angelina Grimke of South Carolina spoke out against slavery at public meetings when it was so bad an not allowed. But because of their bravery, men supported them and now it is allow.

Stanton, Lucy Stone, Lucretia Mott, Harriet Tubman, and Sojourner Truth fight for black rights and freedom.

During the mid-1800s Dorothea Dix was a leader in the movements for prison reform and for providing mental-hospital care for the needy, inspired by Jane Addams and by Lillian Wald, who founded the Henry Street Settlement House in New York City in 1895. Both women helped immigrants adjust to city life.

Mary Elizabeth Lease: "What the farmers need to do is raise less corn and more hell."
Margaret Robins led the National Women's Trade Union League in the early 1900s.

In the 1910s Margaret Sanger crusaded to have birth-control information available for all women.

WHAT A PRIDE!

Feminist Philosophies

"At the end of the 18th century, individual liberty was being hotly debated.
There are many declarations which fight for this. for example:
In 1789, during the French Revolution, Olympe de Gouges published a 'Declaration of the Rights of Woman'

Margaret Fuller, one of the earliest female reporters, wrote 'Woman in the Nineteenth Century' in 1845.

Elizabeth Cady Stanton was a leading theoretician of the women's rights movement. Her 'Woman's Bible', published in parts in 1895 and 1898, attacked what she called the male bias of the Bible.

Charlotte Perkins Gilman:  'Women and Economics' (1898), that women should share the tasks of homemaking, with the women best suited to cook, to clean, and to care for young children doing each respective task.

Politically, many feminists believed that a cooperative society based on socialist economic principles would respect the rights of women. The Socialist Labor party, in 1892, was one of the first national political parties in the United States to include woman suffrage as a plank in its platform.

Actually, women habits are changing, although most young women still married and became the traditional housewives and mothers."

Women in Politics

Women were allowed to vote in the 20's, but they couldn't participate in legal process. Not until Geraldine Ferraro of New York was elected to run for vice-president.

There are many examples of women who believe in themselves and in their people and govern correctly.

Women at Work

In early times women were considered to be unuseful at any work which wasn't housework. So they began working in jobs that were likely to be only for men such as women doctors, lawyers, preachers, teachers, writers, and singers. But they seemed to had a limit: house occupations and family.

In the 90s and 20th century this limits were exceeded. The perfect example was the medical career, which provided women the oportunity to study something that men could also do. Eventhough discrimitation was also seen in schools where membership was only for men.(American Medical Association). Another examples is the teaching profession, which allowed woman work at the same level as a man.

Majority of women worked in service jobs such as secretaries, nurses, waitress, etc.
But discrimitacion continued, and after that, women worked on companies, but didn't had the right to get involved on the decisions.
And even worst, people still believed that married woman shouldn't be payed or hired.
But thank's God, there are now federal laws which order employers to pay women although they're pregnant.

The Legal Status of Women

So that women are inferior to men ... This thought still influenced humanity despite the alleged "intellectual evolution." For example, in England the properties of a married woman were given to the husband, even in other parts of the world the woman was a property as an object: which could not be entitled to make use of the law.

When women started to work outside their homes, they were mistreated by men making women work with heavy work days with a minimum pay.
Fortunately laws began to protect women from this treats during the 60's, making women and men equal in work.

But discrimination didn't stop. The law was always in the men's side, making women look like if they shouldn't deserve any rights in cases of divorce, defense killings and other cases where men were protected in a better way that ladys.

It was until the 20th century, when woman began to have equal rights in work and law matters in some parts of Europe.

The Weaker Sex?

It is proved that women resist more to pain, are more likely to live more than men and that they are capable of doing many chores that were considered to be performed just by men, without mattering if women only were suposed to do home chores.

The stereotype of women is that "her place is in home". For many years women were used only to had kids, nowadays they have the freedom to control their motherhood. But this resulted form the 60's in young women wishing to have children at a younger age and leave school to start a family.

Fortunately, overtime, women proved to be good in school and started wanting to finish college with good grades.

Women's History in America

Early Attitudes Toward Women

Although since ever women are considered as inferior to men, (Greeks, Romans, Christians, Indians), when they were allowed to be free they made important achievements and goods to human life. Such as: Queen Elizabeth of England in the 16th century, Catherine the Great of Russia in the 18th century, and Queen Victoria of England in the 19th century.
